It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Dr. James R Doty., the founder of CCARE at Stanford University and a known global voice on compassion. As many of you may be aware, Dr. Doty had been facing serious medical challenges following a surgery last year.

Dr. Doty, Jim as affectionately called by his friends and colleagues, leaves behind a truly remarkable legacy. His deep connection with and belief in His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s vision for creating a more compassionate world led him to host the Dalai Lama at Stanford University in the 2000’s. These visits, underpinned by Dr. Doty’s enthusiastic interest in creating a forum for professionals to scientifically explore altruism and its underlying motivations, led to the creation of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford. The establishment of CCARE has helped place the study of compassion firmly within science, something that was so dear to Dr. Doty’s life and work. It is also through the auspices of CCARE that CCT™ (Compassion Cultivation Training©) was developed, researched, and initially disseminated.

We mourn the loss of an important champion of compassion.

On behalf of all at Compassion Institute, we offer our sincere condolences to Dr. Doty’s family, friends, colleagues, and students. Like the many he touched, we will rejoice in all that he sparked to bring greater appreciation of compassion into the world.

    Sincerely,
